ABOUT BACLIFF VFD

Bacliff’s History

Bacliff has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1910 by local visionaries G.C. Perkins and W.Y. Fuqua under the name Clifton-by-the Sea. Initially conceived as a picturesque seaside retreat, complete with parks, hotels, and summer homes, the area flourished as a weekend destination. However, the ravages of hurricanes, coupled with Galveston's recovery from the devastating Hurricane of 1900, and the advent of rapid transportation, led to a decline in Clifton-by-the Sea's popularity.

Despite setbacks, the community endured, with the bathhouse and pavilion being restored by 1924, drawing summer residents back to its shores. However, subsequent natural disasters, such as the hurricane of 1943, dealt significant blows to the area, ultimately leading to the demise of the beloved bathhouse and pavilion.

In the aftermath of World War II, Bacliff experienced a resurgence as it became a haven for workers employed by nearby petrochemical plants. This influx of residents necessitated the establishment of essential services, including a post office in 1948. The adoption of the name "Bacliff," albeit due to a clerical error, symbolized a new chapter for the burgeoning community.

Throughout the years, Bacliff navigated various challenges, including property disputes and incorporation proposals, reflecting the evolving aspirations of its residents. Despite failed attempts at incorporation in the 1980s and early 2000s, Bacliff continued to thrive as a vibrant bedroom community, attracting residents seeking proximity to employment opportunities in the region.

The construction of the P. H. Robinson power plant in 1964 marked a significant milestone in Bacliff's industrial landscape, although subsequent disputes over its valuation underscored the complexities of its economic development. The eventual decommissioning of the power plant in 2009, followed by the construction of a modern electrical generation facility in 2017, epitomizes Bacliff's adaptability in the face of changing times.

Natural calamities, such as Hurricane Ike in 2008, posed challenges to the community, yet Bacliff's resilience shone through, aided by its relatively elevated terrain.

Today, Bacliff stands as a thriving community, with a population exceeding 10,000 residents. Its journey, marked by triumphs and tribulations, serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of its inhabitants and their enduring commitment to building a vibrant and resilient home.
